Their concern, for the most part, has been with the shaping and development of legal doctrine— matters which seem more alluring to the legal imagination. But the sharp end of doctrine for the legal practitioner lies in remedy, a subject more prosaic and, with notable exceptions, more neglected in Australian legal scholarship. The purpose of this volume is to encourage discussion of that most basic of remedies, the award of damages. If we have little questioned the purposes and the efficacy of the principles and rules which govern damages awards, there is much to question.
