Monday 20 July 2009, Sydney, Australia - Knowledge of the law is a valuable skill – but only if you can access it. The Law Handbook puts knowledge of the law in New South Wales into the hands of the community.

The new 11th edition of The Law Handbook is now published by Thomson Reuters, a long time supporter of Redfern Legal Centre. Thomson Reuters and Redfern Legal Centre aim to make the law more accessible – especially to anyone with an interest in law or people that need to know about the law in their everyday work such as real estate agents, accountants and small business owners.

Chief Operating Officer at Thomson Reuters, Jackie Rhodes, says, “We are always looking to support the legal system at all levels. Publishing the Handbook lets us support non-profit legal centres, give lawyers the opportunity to share their knowledge, and ensure the community benefits from this shared information.”

According to Redfern Legal Centre’s executive officer Helen Campbell, “This Handbook helps people help themselves, keeping them better informed of their rights and responsibilities in common issues like consumer complaints and employment.”

Thomson Reuters succeeds UNSW Press as the publisher of The Law Handbook, who had published the Handbook since 2004.

The director of UNSW Press, Robin Derricourt, paid tribute to the many writers whose contributions have created the successive editions of the Law Handbook. "The move to Thomson Reuters will ensure their work reaches the widest possible audience of readers, whether citizens, or their legal and community advisors," he said.

The Handbook is written by over ninety legal experts, with a foreword by The Hon Virginia Bell, Justice of the High Court of Australia. It explains the most current information about NSW law in a practical context of people’s lives, from detailing how the court system works to outlining the avenues to settle a tenancy dispute.

The 11th edition is available from major bookstores, and can be ordered direct from Thomson Reuters online www.thomsonreuters.com.au or by phone on 1300 304 195.

Thomson Reuters distributes the current edition of The Environmental Law Handbook, available now, with a new edition expected in 2010.

The second edition of The Family Law Handbook will also be published by Thomson Reuters in the near future.
